Things To Do
|
Bangkok was generally very dirty and very crowded. The sun never really shines properly due to the layer of smog that sits above the city. However it was a good experience, very cheap and we saw as much as we could in the few days we were there.
Also we were walking along the Khao San Road (the main backpackers street) and bumped into Mark Newman and Tom Gregory who I used to go to school with - small world eh!
We wish we had stayed longer and gone away from the city to see the islands and other places Thailand has to offer.
Since this first visit I have been back to Bangkok a few times using it as a base for going of to islands and up north etc. Had some wicked times here going out drinking, but a bit sick of it after spending a whole 2 weeks here.

Food not great - but just step outside for cheap good food. Bit far from main backpackers areas - but taxi / tuk tuk is very cheap to get around.

Riverboat Trip & Snake Farm
|
We got to the little boat harbour and got into a boat with flowers all over it, with only the 2 of us onboard.
The river was really dirty, with loads of shanty towns looking run down houses on the banks and also a few temples.
The boat driver then took us to a snake farm on the side of the river - which we didn't know we were going to at the beginning, but it only cost about 2 quid to get in.
It was pretty good value as the people put on a poisonous snake show where the guy dances around with the snakes and squeezed venom from them - seperated from us by only a 2ft high wall!

The Grand Palace
|
Later in the day we went to the Grand Palace which has been the home of many previus kings. We had a guide who spoke really good English and told us all about the place. The Palace's architecture was made up of thousands of small peices of glass which were hand cut and hand painted - gold being the main colour.
There were also big statues of birds and demons - in all a very beautiful place.

Crocodille & Elephant Zoo
|
The croc zoo was pretty good, although the best bit by far was sitting with 2 tigers and stroking them - they were chained down round the necks.
There was a good croc show where the guys put their heads in the mouths of the crocs
Also you could feed the elephants and sit on their knees etc which was pretty cool.

Rose Gardens
|
The Rose Gardens was a really pretty place, with traditional buildings, nice landscaped gardens etc. There was also a show which had some Thai Boxing, elephants and other cultural displays.

Historic Temples & Riverboat Cruise (Ayuthaya)
|
This trip was a good look at some of the temples, budhas and the more historic things in Thailand. It was quite far from Bangkok, so there were very few people around mainly selling local things.
The nasty old lady in the photos below had loads of birds squashed together in the boxes and you had to pay her to release them!
The temple gardens were really nice and very relaxing. The elephant riding was quality.

Thai Boxing @ Lumphini Stadium - 800-1500baht
|
We went to see the thai boxing and got ring side seats for 1200 baht after negotiation.
It was well worth it, there were about 10 fights in total and we got to see an international fight for one of the belts between a Slovakian and an Irish guy. We then got our pics taken with the champion Slovakian in the dressing rooms.

TV Commercial Extras
|
Carl and I found out from a bloke that we could be TV ad extras for 1500 baht per day. In the end we only got 1000 because the bloke screwed up, but it was a funny experience. We ended up pushing fake dead animals around in the forest!

Wat Po - 20 baht
|
A bit similar to the Grand Palace. Not quite as clean and well maintained. Famous for its huge reclining buddah.
