Things To Do

Dolphin Feeding

Obviously the main attraction to Monkey Mia. Every day, the dolphins come in to the bay at 8am and 10am to be fed.

If you are lucky enough, the Dolphin workers will ask you to com out and feed the dolphin a fish - the dolphins are only fed about a quarter of their daily food intake so they definately aren't dependant on being fed.

This is an amazing experience as the dolphins are literally centimetres away from you.

Shark Spotting

Although the main reason to visit Monkey Mia is for the dolphins, I was much more impressed with the sharks. If you walk along the beach towards the jetty and keep going round to the next bay and keep walking for about 30-40 mins at about 8am you will definately see loads of sharks.

I discovered this purely by accident and was walking in knee deep water when a shark started swimming towards me! I followed the shark along the bay and found a spot where about 8 were circling around.

You will see black tip reef sharks, tiger sharks, shovelnose sharks and sting rays. There is also a big red cliff which you can climb up to view the whole bay and see groups of sharks from an arial point of view.

One of the best things I have done in Australia.

Work on The Pearl Farm - $1

You can work for a day on the pearl farm out in the bay. This only cost $1 but they were thinking of putting the price up to $5.

It is well worth doing this, as you get to see how the pearls are made and all the workings of the farm.

The work involves going out on a boat and collecting the shells, then cleaning them up and re-racking them

Also at lunch time the guys take you out on a boat to look for sharks and sting rays and also provide you with snorkelling gear!

At the end of the day you get given a pearl of your choice from a box either with or without a necklace.I got a black pearl and got it valued at a pearl dealer afterwards and found out it is worth between $300 - $400 RESULT!
