This was the main reason I came to Borneo after reading such good things about it. So far the best thing I have done on my travels (Jul 04) and would definately recommend it to anyone. The actual climb can be done by anyone with average to good fitness, as you can push yourself as hard as you like - we pushed ourselves as hard as possible and were aching for days afterwards! It is also very cold at the top (about3-4 degrees celcius). You WILL need wool hat, gloves, waterproof jacket, jumper or fleece - you can buy all of these very cheaply in Kota Kinabalu from 'Tongs Department Store' which is on the 2nd floor of Wisma Merdeka Shopping Centre. You need to book the climb at 'Sutera Sanctuary Lodges' in Kota Kinabalu on the ground floor of Wisma Sabah. Cost Information Mountain Permit - 100RM Guide - 80RM (Split between a group of a maximum of 9) Accomodation at Park HQ - 12RM Accomodation at Laban Rata (Half way up mountain) - 17RM You start the climb at the power station - it took 3.5hrs to reach Laban Rata - the rest place for the night. The next day we left at 3:30am in the dark and reached the summit at 5am. The sun the rose over Borneo at about 5:45am and was spectacular. The rock formations and the view are amazing at the top and only now you realise that all the hard effort was worthwhile! (Allow a bit more time than this if you have not done any exercise for a while) Met some cool people on the climb who you will see in the photos below - (Dave, Vince, Jo, Phil, Annette, Helen, Franklin, Sharin, Amy, Anna) Also, once a year there is a 'climbathon' where people race from the bottom of the mountain to the top and back down again - the record is about 2.5hrs (see below) unbelievable! |
