Before arriving in Singapore, everyone who I had spoken to about it had said it is really expensive and that you can only really stop for 1 or 2 days at the most.
This is a joke! Here are some rough costs in English Pounds :-
- Backpackers Hostel - £5 (includes breakfast, free internet etc)
- Good Big Meal at Indian Restaurant - £2
- Travelling Around the City All Day by Underground - £2
- Boat ride to an Island - £1
- Beer - £3 a pint (the only expensive thing - alcohol is heavily taxed)
On the whole Singapore is much much cheaper than England and Australia, but obviously a bit more expensive than Thailand and Malaysia.
Singapore is very efficiently run and very clean. There seem to be rules and regulations everywhere which keep things in order - sometimes a bit over the top, like the no studying on the train sign (see below).
It is a great place to go shopping, especially if you are into designer gear. Although Singapore is basically just a city on an island detached from Malaysia, there is surprisingly quite a bit to do. (see below)
Also the best way by far to get around is by using the MRT system (underground rail) and if you are planning on being in Singapore for 2 days or more definately buy an EZlink travel card which you can use on buses aswell and top up easily when the credit runs out.

Probably the cleanest hostel I have stayed in and one of the best - even while staying there a company was employed to come in andly clean all the matresses!
The place is run by 2 guys (Tony and Mark) who were previously backpackers and therefore know what backpackers need and they do a good job of making sure everything is sorted.
A bonus is that Tony runs a 'Food Tour' every Tuesday which includes walking around the area and trying all different types of cuisine. He also tells you information about Singapore, how it is run and you can check out a temple.
The food tour is always slightl different, but usually will end up with a few beers and singing Karaoke if your up for it (see below).
It is a free tour and you are only requires to pay a share of the food bill at the ned of the evening (about £2-3)

Bukit Timar Nature Reserve
|
Nice place to get away from the city and see some nature. The best thing about it for me was seeing all of the Makaques (monkeys) which hang around mainly by the entrance to the reserve waiting for food from visitors.
There is also info in the visitors centre about when the last tigers used to live wild in Singapore . They were shot back in those days as they were thought of as a threat to man.

Pulau Ubin Island - (Crippled Dog Island)
|
Crippled Dog Island is fairly close to Changi Airport and can be reached by bus from Changi and then boat for $2. When you arrive there are numerous places to rent bikes for $6 per day which would be the best way to see the island.
It is also possible to camp on the island for free. If you are really luck you may even get to see the legendary crippled dog which the Island gained its name from!

Botanical Gardens & Orchid Gardens
|
Fairly pleasant way to spend the day. A good place to, walk around or just lie down and read a book.
The Orchid Gardens are part of the main gardens and cost $2 to enter. The whole place is generally well kept and looked after.

Night Safari - $24
|
The night safari opens after 7pm, when you get there you pay to get in and then you can pay more to go on a tram which takes you round the safari looking at the animals at night. The place is well laid out and when you are looking at the animals it feels as though there is no fence between you and them.
Its a nice thing to do, but if you have time it is probably better to see the animals in the wild like in Taman Negara, Malaysia or Uncle Tans, Borneo (although you will not see lions or tigers there which you will see in the night safari)
