When I got to Tioman, I had already been to the Perhentian Islands and was quite disapointed, I also was supposed to meet a mate there, but had lost his email so all was not looking good....however......
Met a nice German girl (Sonja) who I stayed with for the 5 days I was there, there were the 2 of us in one dorm and a Swedish guy (Daniel) in the other dorm.
We went treking 8kms over to the other side of the island to Juara Beach which is beatiful and very uncrowded - well worth the walk. Then we managed to blag 2 boat tickets back for RM50 when they were supposed to be RM50 each!
Also it is worth walking on the track towards the North of the Island to Monkey Beach and Monkey Bay. We went snorkelling there quite far out near the rocks and saw a couple of fair sized sharks which came swimming very close to us!
Although most people who have been to the Perhentians say Tioman isn't worth it, this is slightly unfair. They are very different and have very different atmospheres. I think it is worth spending a few days on Tioman. Also Tioman Island has the most friendly people I have met in Malaysia by far.
Food is generally cheaper than the Perhentians and beer is much much cheaper (RM3-4 for a can in a bar or RM2 in a shop as opposed to RM8 on the Perhentians) - the Island is a duty free zone.
Internet is between RM8-RM10 per hour.

We were very lucky as Sonja and I were the only 2 in the 5 bed dorm. Daniel next door had the whole place to himself. Definately recommended.
